Polygraphs and microexpressions are frequently portrayed in the popular media (e.g., movies, TV shows) as reliable methods
for detecting deception. Having now read about the history of and research on the polygraph (Synnott et al., 2015) and an
empirical test of the extent to which “microexpressions” are associated with concealed and falsified emotions
(Porter & tenBrinke, 2008), do you think that one method is more scientifically valid than the other? Do you think that these methods should be utilized in criminal investigations? Why or why not?
