Watch this HBO Documentary film called Unchained Memories (2003). The WPA’s Federal Writers’ Project in the 1930s transcribed the memories of former African-American slaves that were still living. A large number of black actors and actresses including Whoopi Goldberg, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis and Oprah Winfrey, verbally recreated the memories of those who lived under the yoke of slavery.
Next take a look at the website Born into Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers’ Project 1936-1938. Then, review the narratives found at “Voices and Faces from the Collection.”
