Coriolis Force
Result of earth spinning
In Northern Hemisphere, Coriolis Force deflects moving objects to the RIGHT
Force is proportional to velocity
Force is a function of latitude (zero at equator)
Zoom Poll: Coriolis Force
A) Deflects moving objects to the Left in the Southern Hemisphere
B) is proportional to velocity
C) Is a function of latitude with smallest force at the Poles
D) Exists on Venus
E) Allows hurricanes to be stable, rotating systems

How does Climate differ from Weather?
How do you prepare for different weather each day?
How do you prepare for different climates?
Climate vs. Weather
Weather is the day-to-day state of the atmosphere, and its short-term variation in minutes to weeks. "How hot is it right now?" and "Will we get a snowstorm this week?"
Climate is the weather of a place averaged over a period of time, often 30 years. Climate information tells us about the normal weather, as well as the range of weather extremes for a location.
More Weather Basics
Land heats faster than water
Wind flows from High pressure to Low Pressure
Wind circulates counterclockwise in Northern Hemisphere
Due to spinning Earth
