Ms. Pen is a veteran math teacher that is new to the district. She has taught math for the past 17 years. Her references stated that she had excellent classroom management, her lesson plans were written in detail, and she had 75% or greater of her students who scored proficient on the state assessment. This year, her first year in our school, when I observed her 7th-grade and 8th-grade classes, I noticed that her 7th-graders are wild and out of control, and she spends most of the class period correcting behavior issues. I also noticed that the 7th graders did not do as well on the first benchmark assessment, with only 25% scoring proficient. Ms. Pen openly expressed her concerns about the 7th graders with the other middle school teachers. She is overwhelmed and feels she should focus her energy on the 8th graders, who are more interested in learning.
